Sustainable Sweets

I Scream, You Scream, We all Scream for Sustainable Sweets!

Halloween has to be the sugar industry’s favorite day, and the dentist’s least favorite time of year. If you are a festive baker in the house, don’t forget two words when planning your sweets: LOCAL and ORGANIC.

  • Make your own sweets by using materials for the local farmer’s market or check the organic food section at your local grocery store.
  • There is a farmer’s market on Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon at the Irvine Center on the corner of Bridge and Campus (across from UCI).
  • Another market takes place on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Historic Park at the Irvine Ranch (13042 Old Myford Road).
  • The Great Park also has a farmer’s market every Sunday from 10:00 a.m. – 2 p.m. located next to the Farm and Food Lab (enter at Sand Canyon and Marine Way). It is open rain or shine and parking and admission are free. For additional information, visit www.ocgp.org.
  • Click here for a complete list of farmer’s markets in Orange County.
  • Here are some suggestions for snacks:
  • Use organic peanut butter, jelly and bread. Cut sandwiches into the shapes of pumpkins, ghosts, and witch’s hats (look for Halloween-themed cookie cutters).
  • Bake cookies using organic ingredients or make popcorn balls with peanut butter.
  • Fill a clay pot with dirt and worms, treats that is, made of crumbled up chocolate wafers from organic chocolate cookies and gummy worms.
  • This is the perfect time of year to find a local, organic farm and get some organics apples and cider.
